Streamlight Innovation:
Introducing Streamlight’s TLR-3®
The First LED Tactical Light Designed for Compact Weapons
Identifying a need in the marketplace for a quality LED tactical light to fit on increasingly popular compact and sub-compact semi-automatic handguns, Streamlight Chief Engineer Charles Craft challenged his team to develop a new, compact gun-mounted light.
The result is the new Streamlight TLR-3®, an innovative product that brings LED power to compact weapons and also fits full-size hand guns.
Streamlight had a head start with its powerful C4® LED technology, which offers two to three times the output of incandescent lights. There were challenges: the TLR-3 had to fit comfortably on compact pistols, so the light itself had to be both light-weight and small in length. It also had to accommodate a battery and circuitry.
Streamlight’s designers brought the TLR-3 down to a weight of 2.32 ounces, and the length to 2.71 inches by optimizing the circuitry, using a single 3V CR2 lithium battery and light-weight, impact-resistant Engineering polymer casing.
Next was testing. Craft said that he and others in his department put the TLR-3 through extensive testing in Streamlight’s shooting range. “The TLR-3 was tested with thousands of rounds on a variety of hand-guns with no failures. In fact, we wore out one of the pistols – and the TLR-3 just kept going.”
With Streamlight’s patented, interchangeable key design, the TLR-3 is easily adapted to fit the broadest array of handguns of any light on the market.
For its compact size, the TLR-3 offers up to 4,100 candela peak beam intensity and up to 90 lumens of measured system output with a parabolic reflector that produces a concentrated beam with optimum peripheral illumination. It provides a run time of up to 1.5 continuous hours to the 10% output level.
